A well-tailored suit is an investment – in both style and confidence. But even the finest wool suit can lose its crisp look if it’s worn often without proper care. Many people make the mistake of sending their suits to the dry cleaner too frequently, which can wear down the fibres and shorten the garment’s life. Fortunately, there are simple ways to keep your suit looking sharp and smelling fresh between cleanings – without damaging the fabric.

Air It, Don’t Over-Clean It

The first and most important rule is to let your suit rest and air out after each wear. Wool is a natural, self-cleaning material that benefits from a bit of breathing space. Hang your jacket and trousers on sturdy wooden hangers and leave them in a well-ventilated room for a day. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the fabric, and steer clear of damp areas like bathrooms, where moisture can harm the fibres.

Regular airing removes odours and moisture, keeping your suit fresh without the need for harsh chemicals.

Brush, Don’t Wipe

Dust, lint and hair can quickly settle on your suit, especially on darker fabrics. Instead of wiping with a damp cloth – which can leave marks – use a soft clothes brush. Brush gently in the direction of the fabric’s weave after each wear. This keeps the surface smooth and prevents dirt from embedding itself in the fibres.

A good quality natural-bristle brush is a small investment that can significantly extend your suit’s lifespan.

Treat Stains with Care

Small stains don’t always require a trip to the dry cleaner. Blot gently with a damp cloth and a little mild wool detergent – never rub. Always test on an inconspicuous area first. For stubborn marks, use steam from an iron (without touching the fabric directly) to loosen the stain before blotting again.

For grease stains, sprinkle a little talcum powder or cornflour on the area and leave it overnight. Brush it off the next day – it will absorb the oil without harming the fabric.

Steam, Don’t Iron

A suit rarely needs ironing. In fact, too much heat can flatten the fibres and ruin the fabric’s natural drape. Instead, use a garment steamer to remove creases and refresh the cloth. Alternatively, hang your suit in the bathroom while you take a hot shower – the gentle steam will help smooth out wrinkles.

If you must iron, use a low heat setting, place a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric, and avoid pressing too hard.

Store It Properly

When not in use, hang your suit on a broad, shaped hanger that supports the shoulders. Avoid wire hangers, which can distort the shape. Store it in a breathable garment bag – never plastic – to allow air circulation. If you own several suits, give them space in the wardrobe so they’re not crushed together.

During the warmer months, when you might wear your suits less often, place a piece of cedar wood in the wardrobe. It naturally repels moths and leaves a pleasant scent.

When to Dry Clean

Even with careful maintenance, there will come a time when your suit needs professional cleaning. As a rule of thumb, once or twice a year is usually enough, depending on how often you wear it. Choose a cleaner experienced with wool and delicate fabrics, and let them know about any specific stains so they can treat them appropriately.

Over-cleaning can dry out the fibres and dull the fabric’s sheen – so save it for when it’s truly necessary.

A Well-Cared-For Suit Speaks Volumes

Keeping your suit in top condition isn’t just about appearance – it’s about respecting quality and craftsmanship. With a few simple habits, you can preserve its shape, texture and elegance for years to come. It doesn’t take much – just a bit of routine and the right care.

So next time you take off your jacket after a long day, hang it properly, give it a quick brush, and let it breathe. Your suit will thank you – and you’ll always look your best, without wearing out the fabric.
